Volume I

Christ Among the Candlesticks

The Seven Churches

Volume I begins where the Revelation begins, not with the beasts, Babylon, or Armageddon, but with Jesus Christ standing in the midst of His church.

About This Volume

John, exiled upon the isle of Patmos, hears behind him a great voice “as of a trumpet,” and turning, sees seven golden candlesticks, and standing in their midst “one like unto the Son of man.” From that vision of the glorified Christ, the commentary follows Him among the candlesticks and examines His messages to the seven churches.

The seven churches were real congregations in Asia Minor, facing real spiritual conditions. But together they also reveal a much larger prophetic picture: the church moving through successive periods of the Gospel Day.

The Seven Church Ages

Select a church to see its age, its approximate dates, and a key message from Christ’s letter. Explore them in any order.

Church 1 of 7

Ephesus

The Apostolic Church Age

  • A.D. 33–270
  • Revelation 2:1–7

The church of the apostles, marked by purity, apostolic faith, and spiritual power. Christ commends its works, labour, and patience, yet calls it to remember from whence it had fallen and to repent.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” Revelation 2:4, KJV

Church 2 of 7

Smyrna

The Age of Persecution

  • A.D. 270–530
  • Revelation 2:8–11

An age of persecution, endurance, and faithfulness. Christ knows its tribulation and poverty, declares the church rich, and promises a crown of life to those who are faithful unto death.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” Revelation 2:10, KJV

Church 3 of 7

Pergamos

The Age of Compromise

  • A.D. 530–1530
  • Revelation 2:12–17

The longest of the ages, a time of spiritual darkness, compromise, and the rise of papal power. Christ commends those who held fast His name, yet calls the church to repent.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” Revelation 2:16, KJV

Church 4 of 7

Thyatira

The Protestant Church Age

  • A.D. 1530–1730
  • Revelation 2:18–29

The age when the Reformation recovered long-neglected biblical truths, though not fully restored. Christ commends its works, charity, service, faith, and patience, yet rebukes the toleration of Jezebel and calls His people to hold fast.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.” Revelation 2:25, KJV

Church 5 of 7

Sardis

The Age of Sanctification and Spiritual Awakening

  • A.D. 1730–1880
  • Revelation 3:1–6

An age shaped by calls to holiness, missionary movements, and revival, and also by decline. Christ calls the church to be watchful and to strengthen the things which remain.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.” Revelation 3:2, KJV

Church 6 of 7

Philadelphia

The Age of Unity

  • A.D. 1880–1930
  • Revelation 3:7–13

An age marked by gospel outreach and worldwide witness. Christ sets before this church an open door that no man can shut, and commends it for keeping His word and not denying His name.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” Revelation 3:8, KJV

Church 7 of 7

Laodicea

The Final Church Age

  • A.D. 1930–Return of Christ
  • Revelation 3:14–22

The final church age, leading to the return of Christ, marked by increasing apostasy, materialism, and lukewarmness. Even so, Christ still calls individuals to repent, to open the door, and to overcome.

A key message from Christ’s letter

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20, KJV

A Note on the Prophetic Framework

The seven letters were addressed to real congregations in the Roman province of Asia, and they speak first to those churches. This commentary also traces their prophetic significance: the spiritual conditions found in these congregations correspond to conditions that prevailed in the church at different periods of the Gospel Day, from Pentecost to the return of Christ.

The dates shown are approximate guideposts, not rigid boundaries. Each age describes a prevailing condition, not the spiritual state of every believer who lived during it, and the ages overlap at their transitions as one condition gives way to another.
